Charlie Graffius, MA, CSCS, CPT

Journey in Athletics

Despite his cerebral palsy diagnosis, Charlie was able to defy the odds of what doctors believed to be possible by playing varsity baseball and tennis in college.

He now spends his free time hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, currently working on completing the 48 4,000 foot peaks. He also spends time playing a variety of sports and lifting weights.

No journey consists of linear progression; this is especially apparent physically for a nervous system with Cerebral Palsy that is pushing the limits of what is possible. Charlie views everyday as a learning experience for himself, monitoring physical and emotional stress closely guides his exercise selection and intensity on each given day.

About Charlie

Charlie was born with spastic diplegic Cerebral Palsy (CP), a neurological condition affecting motor function primarily in the lower extremities. His life has always revolved around athletics, but was frustrated with his physical limitations during childhood.

This led him to consume as much information as possible on human movement, relating these findings to his own lived experience; giving valuable insights to help others with complex physical conditions.

He recently returned to Portland, Maine from New York City after attending Columbia University for a Master's degree. Here he worked in the Center for Cerebral Palsy Research as a Research Assistant, combining the use of brain stimulation and intensive motor learning to improve hand function for children with CP. Charlie now sees clients in person in Portland, Maine.

Charlie holds the following certifications:

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA)

Certified Personal Training (CPT) through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)

BS, Exercise Science from Colby-Sawyer College

MA, Motor Learning & Motor Control from Teachers College, Columbia University.
